Here are a few ways that teachers can potentially earn more money:
- Obtain advanced degrees or certifications: Many school districts offer pay incentives for teachers who have advanced degrees or specialized certifications.
- Take on additional responsibilities: Some teachers may be able to earn additional pay by taking on roles such as department chair, coach, or mentor.
- Negotiate a higher salary: Teachers can negotiate for a higher salary when they are hired or when they are up for a raise. It’s important to be well-prepared and to have a clear idea of the value you bring to the school or district. During my career it has been impressive how many times this worked, it just so happened that based on my expertise, I had the confidence to ask for the higher salary and turn down weak offers.
- Consider teaching in a higher-paying district or state: Teachers in some districts or states may earn more than those in other areas due to differences in the cost of living and other factors. You may also consider teaching at a private school or charter school.
- Explore opportunities for extra income outside of teaching: Some teachers may be able to earn additional income by tutoring or teaching summer school. There was one year were I potentially made about $7,500 from tutoring and my prices ranged from $25-30/hr. In this day and age with the possibility for virtual tutoring, you could stand to make even more.
It’s worth noting that while these strategies may help teachers to earn more money, they may also involve additional time and effort.
